Silicone foam sealant, also known as silicone foam sponge, is a polymer elastomer combining the dual advantages of silicone rubber and foam materials. It is manufactured via high-temperature foaming and vulcanization process using raw silicone rubber as the base, together with fillers, vulcanizing agents and foaming agents. The material features high resilience and aging resistance inherent to rubber, as well as sound absorption and shock damping properties of foam. Therefore, silicone foam sealant is widely used for waterproofing, shock buffering, gasketing, sound insulation, electrical insulation and aerospace thermal insulation.
The core technology of new energy electric vehicles lies in the charge-discharge efficiency and safety assurance of high-energy-density lithium batteries. Lithium batteries require reliable waterproof and dustproof performance during operation. Meanwhile, preventing thermal runaway and spontaneous combustion is the top priority for safe operation. To guarantee sealing and cushioning of EV batteries under harsh conditions such as heavy rain, shallow water fording and haze, leading US automakers including Tesla were the first to adopt silicone foam sealant in power battery design.
Taking the battery pack of Tesla Model 3 as an example, substantial amounts of foamed silicone potting material are used to protect individual cells for module weight reduction and improved safety. This material can effectively delay heat transfer from the upper section of the battery pack to the cells for a certain period, lowering the risk of thermal runaway. Tesla’s technological leadership in power batteries has further accelerated the large-scale adoption of silicone foam materials in EV battery packs.
Silicone foam sealant serves an important function in LED assemblies. It prevents light leakage, blocks dust, absorbs impact and improves air tightness. Besides, it performs excellently around speakers and audio components by reducing noise and filling gaps.
Currently, polyurethane foam materials are widely used in automotive interiors such as flooring, headliners, steering wheels and seats, thanks to mature technology and competitive pricing. Nevertheless, polyurethane foams suffer from poor weather resistance, high flammability and toxic fume emission during combustion. With growing adoption and awareness of silicone foam sealant, this eco-friendly material is expected to gradually replace conventional polyurethane foam in the future.
